Pyotr Weil (1949-2009) was a well-known writer, journalist, and literary critic. His books "The Genius of Place", "Map of the Homeland", "Poems about Me" (as well as "The 60s: The World of a Soviet Man", "Americana", "Russian Cuisine in Exile", "Native Speech", etc., written in co-authorship with A. Genis) have had more than one print run and continue to be reprinted, and the bestselling "The Genius of Place" became the basis for a multi-part TV movie. The collection "Freedom - a point of reference" includes selected essays, articles, reviews, and interviews published by Weil during more than two decades in the Russian and foreign press. Encyclopedic breadth and depth of knowledge combined with masterful penmanship and subtle humor - a phenomenon in journalism is extremely rare. Weil was friends with many talented people, he was instantly aware of everything that was happening in theater, cinema, literature, but most importantly, he wanted and was able to share his knowledge and was a popularizer of art and literature in the best sense of the word.
