I had this dream of seeing myself as a little girl.
Like five years old. Cheeky, babyish, with straw-colored hair burned out in the southern sun. I loved talking to the caterpillars. I asked them questions and waited patiently for answers. The caterpillars would curl up or crawl away. Silent.
I wanted to see myself as a ten-year-old. Funny, angular, shy. With long, thin pigtails down my shoulders. Dad bought a record player, and we listened to fairy tales all day long. We put a vinyl record on a stand, pressed a special button; holding our breath, we carefully lowered the membrane. And listen, listen, listen.
I wanted so much to see myself as a little girl that I once took and wrote a book about my childhood. About my family and our friends. About my siblings. About the town where I was born. About the people who live there.
