Yury A. Akvilianov's new book provides a popular account of the mounted battles of the Russian Civil War from 1918 to 1922. It examines the views of the "Whites" and "Reds" on the use of mounted forces in the context of class armed confrontation.

The Civil War on the territory of the former Russian Empire gave rise to new principles and methods for employing mounted forces across the vast expanses of Russia. Strategic and field cavalry were widely used by the opposing sides as mounted battering rams against poorly prepared enemy defenses, to carry out deep envelopment attacks on enemy troops, to conduct mounted raids into their rear areas to destroy headquarters of all categories, disrupt troop command and control, and to disrupt communications, including railways, bridges, and communication lines.
During the Civil War, both sides practiced new types of cavalry combat operations in conjunction with armored mechanized units and aviation. This subsequently served as impetus for the development of the Soviet command's views on the use of cavalry in motorized warfare.

The book is intended for a wide range of readers interested in Russian history.
