General Yakov Slashchov was a man of remarkable destiny, receiving numerous awards for military operations during World War I and the Civil War. In 1919-1920, he gained fame for his bravery and courage in the defense of Crimea, earning him the title "Crimean" from Peter Wrangel. Slashchov himself was a controversial figure: for his talent as a military commander, he was nicknamed "General Yasha," while for his cruelty, he was called a hangman and executioner. It is no wonder his image attracted the attention of Mikhail Bulgakov, who, in his novella "The Flight," portrayed Slashchov in two characters—Khludov and Charnot.

After a conflict with Peter Wrangel and the evacuation, Slashchov unexpectedly returned to Soviet Russia and defected to the Bolsheviks. He became a tactics instructor at the "Vystrel" (Shot) course, a "field academy" for command personnel. Among his students were the future Marshals A. Vasilevsky and R. Malinovsky.

In his book, Ya. A. Slashchov detailed the victories and defeats of the White movement in Crimea, the defeat of the Volunteer Army, the brilliant military operations, the commanders-in-chief A. Denikin and P. Wrangel, and his relationship with the latter.
