The author of these memoirs, Philipp Moiseyevich Weizmann (1911–2008), left Moscow with his parents as a teenager in 1927 for Genoa, where his father was posted as an employee of the Soviet trade mission. In 1932, his father was ordered to return to the USSR, but sensing that reprisals awaited him, he refused to return. His family also remained in Italy: young Philipp earned an engineering degree and citizenship there. However, in 1938, after Mussolini introduced racial laws, the Weizmann family decided to emigrate again. The refugees were eventually given shelter by Tangier, Morocco, then an ephemeral state under the protectorate of European powers. After many years of wandering, the memoirist returned to Italy, where his citizenship was restored.
