The company "Kunst & Albers" was founded by German merchants in Vladivostok, a new Russian city on the Pacific Ocean, in 1864. Their business developed as quickly as Vladivostok. Soon the company became the leading trading house in the Far East. When the Tsarist Empire built the Trans-Siberian Railway, the department stores "Kunst & Albers" were already selling all kinds of goods in all the cities between Vladivostok and Blagoveshchensk, from nails to the latest fashions from Paris.

The book tells the story of the lives of successful merchants Gustav Kunst, Gustav Albers and Adolf Dattan, including the story of their struggle with accusations of espionage, when the company was already on the verge of collapse, destroyed by large-scale catastrophes: revolutions, World War I and the Civil War.
