In contrast to the Italian memoirs, the difference in the assessment of the First Battle of Sirte is especially noticeable: if for the Italian admiral Iachino it was a great victory, which allowed to provide convoys to North Africa, then for the British this event was only a short-term firefight during a routine operation to escort transport to Malta. However, the Second Battle of Sirte was called one of the most brilliant victories of the Royal Navy in the war by the British commander of the Mediterranean Fleet Andrew Cunningham. Despite the numerical and technical superiority of the Italian fleet, the British sailors were able to successfully protect the convoy, preventing the enemy from reaching their transports. The author analyzes in detail the reasons for this victory, emphasizing that it was made possible by tactical ingenuity, the heroism of the crews and the mistakes of the Italian command.
