This book is a unique look at two famous naval battles in the Gulf of Sirte during World War II, described through the prism of the memoirs of the British participants - from admirals to ordinary sailors. In contrast to the Italian memoirs, the difference in the assessment of the First Battle of Sirte is especially noticeable: if for the Italian admiral Iachino it was a great victory, which allowed to provide convoys to North Africa, then for the British this event was only a short-term firefight during a routine operation to escort transport to Malta. However, the Second Battle of Sirte was called one of the most brilliant victories of the Royal Navy in the war by the British commander of the Mediterranean Fleet Andrew Cunningham. Despite the numerical and technical superiority of the Italian fleet, the British sailors were able to successfully protect the convoy, preventing the enemy from reaching their transports. The author analyzes in detail the reasons for this victory, emphasizing that it was made possible by tactical ingenuity, the heroism of the crews and the mistakes of the Italian command.

The book also reveals the problems that the Royal Navy faced in the pre-war and war years: a reduction in the military budget, a lack of modern weapons, limited ship capabilities and fuel crises. These difficulties forced British sailors to show incredible ingenuity and resilience in battles against a stronger enemy.

Particular attention is paid to the role of Malta as a strategic point in the Mediterranean and the struggle to deliver vital supplies there. The authors describe in detail the actions of the German air force and the Italian fleet, as well as the tactical decisions that led to the success or failure of the operations.
The book offers the reader not only a gripping account of the naval battles, but also a deep analysis of the military and political decisions that influenced the course of the war in the Mediterranean. This is a story of heroism, mistakes and lessons that remain relevant to this day.
