The late Russian Empire was marked by rapid economic change and social upheaval, including two wars, two famines, and three revolutions. How did religious practices change during these transformations, and what role did the Orthodox clergy play in the last decades of the empire? Drawing on extensive archival material, Daniel Scarborough explores the impact of the pastoral movement on Russian society and the Orthodox Church. He argues that the social work of parish priests shifted the focus of Orthodox activity in Russia towards social activism as a practice of piety. The author’s perspective on the position of the pastorate shows how historical upheavals changed ideas about the very essence of religiosity, which in turn influenced the modernization of the Orthodox Church. Daniel Scarborough, PhD, is Associate Professor of Russian History and Religion at Nazarbayev University.
