In a small town near Appalachia, local traditions are still alive. People paint the walls of their houses blue to ward off evil spirits and say that black ferns grow where death will soon come. Agnes Wilder, a pious and bossy old woman, rules her granddaughter Weatherly with an iron hand because she has a rare gift: she can conjure death.
Weatherly wants to leave the town and get rid of her grandmother's control, but becomes a hostage of her gift, because someone can die while she is not around.
Weatherly's best friend and cousin, Adair, also has a gift: she can see the future. Right before she was in a car accident, Adair saw something frightening. Weatherly knows about it, and she's sure the vision has something to do with the town's mayor, who, upon learning of it, decides to get rid of the seer. But when the mayor's son dies and Weatherly fails to talk him out of death for the first time, the whole town suspects that she deliberately didn't save him. Weatherly, enlisting the help of a soul guide, sets out to prove her innocence and find her cousin's killer, no matter what it costs her.
