Russian statehood and foreign policy strategy did not appear all of a sudden and not by the will of a particular ruler or ruling dynasty. They did not have a single author-demiurge, they are the result of a series of efforts, a string of successive victories and failures. The struggle against tribute dependence on the Golden Horde gradually flowed into an offensive against the former invaders, and the reflection of crusader aggression in the Baltic was imperceptibly replaced by Russian pressure on the western neighbors. It is almost impossible to separate chronologically these stages of international relations of the Russian lands, but by the end of the XV century in the northern part of Eurasia a power with its own unique view of the world and itself in this world emerged.
