Inessa Pleskachevska's book "After the Revolutions. What Became of Eastern Europe" is a detailed study of the changes that took place in the former socialist countries, Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany (former GDR), Poland, Romania, Czech Republic and Slovakia (former Czechoslovakia), and the hearts of the people who lived through the revolutions of 1989. It contains interviews of those who grew up under socialism and personally witnessed the shift in the nation's consciousness and way of life, and those who never knew socialism and do not understand how one can be nostalgic for that time.
The author worked on the project from 2014 to 2019 (the 2024 edition is edited and expanded by the author). During these five years, Inessa Pleskaczewska managed to talk to a wide variety of people: from the last king of Bulgaria, Simeon II, the last general secretary of the SED Central Committee, Egon Krenz, and the first prime minister of independent Slovakia, Vladimir Meciar, to one of Romania's richest men and visionary Florin Talpesh, the world-famous Polish film director Krzysztof Zanussi, and Janos Kobor, the frontman of the Hungarian band Omega. She met and talked with politicians, celebrities, millionaires, teachers and pensioners - people of different social status - to get the most detailed picture possible of the changing world of Eastern Europeans.
