This book by Charles H. Addison, a legal scholar and expert on the history of the order, is dedicated to the legendary fraternity of the Poor Knights of the Temple of Jerusalem. The author recounts the origins of the most powerful military-religious order of the time, the specifics of the rite, hierarchy, and possessions of the Templars in the East and West. Addison recounts the Templars' exploits in defense of the Holy Land, the participation of the Knights Templar in the military campaigns of Richard the Lionheart and other Christian kings, the confrontation with Saladin, the siege of Jerusalem, and the tragic loss of Acre, the Templars' last stronghold in the Holy Land, and also covers the Templar trials in England. In the last chapters of his book, Charles Addison, Esquire of the Inner Temple, describes the principal residence of the Templars in England and the magnificent church of the monastery, and also recounts the history of the London Temple after the dissolution of the order and the transfer of its possessions to the ownership of lawyers, who restored a number of the customs of the Knights Templar and revived the traditions of former hospitality.
