"Reflections on the Revolution in France" (1790) - the most famous work of Edmund Burke (1729-1797), a prominent British orator and statesman, philosopher, aesthete and publicist, traditionally considered the founder of modern conservative ideology. Immediately after its publication, "Reflections..." became a world bestseller, was soon translated into the major European languages, and has been repeatedly reprinted in the Old and New Worlds to widespread acclaim and acclamation. The work had a significant influence on the literature of the following centuries, remaining at the center of attention of famous British literary figures - the leading essayists and critics of the Victorian era. For many years it remained at the center of ideological and literary polemics. Thus, William Hazlitt considered Burke the first writer of his time, Thomas Macaulay the greatest man after J. Milton, and Karl Marx a sycophant who slandered the French Revolution at the behest of the English oligarchy.
