Friedrich August von Hayek (1899-1992), winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1974, was one of the most prominent representatives of classical liberalism. He is now considered a classic not only of economic but also of political thought, and as such is recognized not only by classical liberals but also by conservatives and representatives of other political movements. The book "Law, Legislation and Freedom" is the most detailed presentation of Hayek's ideas on the evolution of social norms and institutions. Existing rules and customs, the institutions of property and contract, and values such as honesty and peace are rooted in society by virtue of their expediency. But we do not fully understand how they work; they have established themselves, not through the conscious efforts of individuals. Precisely because the relationship between individual behavior and overarching order is so difficult to predict, we should not think that by forcing people to act in a certain way, a truly viable society can be created. The author's socio-political conception is the basis for his doctrine of constitutionalism, which is highly original and yet critical of the existing institutions of the liberal democratic state.
