Every parent wants to instill in their child a beautiful and strong character for a happy life. Children look to those around them for inspiration, and often, role models come from books. The most compelling examples are real-life figures, and among them, the most beautiful are saints and their life experiences. Who are martyrs? Anyone would agree: they are those who suffer. Difficult homework can be a torment, and athletic records are achieved through long, agonizing training. But there is another kind: holy martyrdom. For their faith and love for Christ, martyrs accepted cruel suffering and even death. Holy martyrs endured suffering with great steadfastness, and this strengthened Christians in their faith and inspired new converts to Christianity. According to the early Christian writer Tertullian, the blood of Christians was the seed from which faith grew. Orthodox Christians remember holy martyrs, are inspired by their fervent faith, and name their children after them. One of the martyrs, Barbara, will be discussed in this book.
