The "Monuments of Historical Thought" series publishes a monograph by Soviet historian and Anglophone Nikolai Aleksandrovich Erofeev (1907–1997), "Ten Lectures on the Methodology of History." The monograph presents a system of theoretical and methodological views developed by the practicing historian over decades of work. Written by one of the leading figures in Russian historical scholarship at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, Erofeev's book exemplifies the stylistic differences between two eras of Soviet historiography. Originally published in 1976 in a significantly abridged form, the current edition is based on the surviving 1969 manuscript. The book is accompanied by an article and commentary revealing the dramatic fate of the manuscript, which fell into the tectonic fault line between two eras of Soviet history—the era of the sixties and the era of stagnation.
The study focuses on the disciplinary development of historical knowledge, ideological issues, and the personal characteristics of a historian living in an age of great mystification and upheaval. The full text of "Ten Lectures on the Methodology of History" was prepared by Pavel Yuryevich Uvarov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Historical Sciences, and Head of the Department of Western European Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the Institute of Historical Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Sultana Gilmidinovna Ktsoeva, Doctor of Historical Sciences and Senior Researcher at the Sochi Institute of Historical Studies of the VSC RAS.
