Gilles Deleuze was a philosopher. Félix Guattari was a psychoanalyst. The lives and collaborative work of these major figures of French intellectual life in the second half of the twentieth century are a striking example of the political and intellectual flowering of the May 1968 period. Deleuze (1925-1995) taught philosophy at the experimental university of Vincennes and, drawing on a deep understanding of the history of philosophy, undertook the unique work of conceptualization. Félix Guattari (1930-1992) was a professional psychoanalyst and one of Lacan's earliest disciples. A member of numerous leftist movements, he practiced at La Borde Psychiatric Clinic and created a self-governing research collective, the Center for Institutional Research and Education, in 1966. Their introduction to each other in 1969 would be the beginning of a great friendship and unprecedented intellectual adventure. In this dual biography, François Doss draws on his work with unpublished archival materials and lengthy conversations with numerous witnesses to reveal the logic of a work that bridges theory and experiment, concept creation, critical thought, and social practice. Doss explores the secrets of a unique co-creation that forms a distinct page in our intellectual history that is still relevant today.
