With his first book "Stolbtsy" (1929) Nikolai Zabolotsky once and for all established his name in Russian poetry. The recognized theorist of verse and literary critic Y. N. Tynyanov gave the young poet his book with the inscription: "To the first poet of our days". But "Stolbtsy" was the only book that N. Zabolotsky managed to compile himself. Innovative experiments of the poet were subjected to the harshest ideological criticism. Later he published three more collections of poems, severely curtailed by censorship. Having experienced a rare dramatic fate (eight years of imprisonment in the Gulag), Nikolai Zabolotsky after a long, forced silence managed to return to poetry and created in the 1940-1950s — already in the classical manner — dozens of lyrical masterpieces. Connoisseurs of literature during his lifetime put Zabolotsky on a par with Tyutchev, Boratynsky. And one of our contemporaries thus defined his place in Russian literature: "Boratynsky — became the largest poet of the XIX century in the XX, Zabolotsky — will be the largest poet of the XX century in the XXI.
