The Russian-Chinese border is one of the longest land borders in the world, but it has received undeservedly little attention in modern historiography. In his book, Søren Urbanski attempts to fill this gap by examining the formation and changing contours of the border over a long chronological perspective, from the seventeenth century - the time when the frontier territory existed without a clearly defined demarcation - to the twentieth century, when the border line gained geopolitical significance and became a tightly patrolled barrier. Through the daily lives of communities on the Russian-Chinese border, the author demonstrates how states have managed to impose control over kinship, culture, economic and religious ties on both sides of the border through legislation, deportations, forced assimilation and propaganda. Søren Urbanski is a historian, a fellow at the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C., and director of its affiliate at the University of California, Berkeley.
