Yuri Levitansky, Soviet and Russian poet and translator, one of the most subtle lyricists of the twentieth century, was born in Ukraine in 1922. After graduating from school he entered the then famous IFLI - Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature and History. From the second course he volunteered for the front, participated in the defense of Moscow, since 1943 he was regularly published in front newspapers. In the postwar period he published several poetry collections, engaged in translations. Many of Levitansky's poems - "watercolors of soulful experiences" (M. Lukonin) - were put to music and became songs, including the famous "Dialogue at the New Year's tree", heard in the movie "Moscow does not believe in tears". The turning point in the poet's work was the book of poems "Cinematograph" (1970), included in this edition, which brought the author loud fame. Like the subsequent collections "The Day of So-and-So" (1976) and "Letters to Katerina, or Walking with Faust" (1981), "Cinematograph" was written as a single work, built on the laws of musical composition. This edition is completed with works from the book "White Poems" (1991), created in the last years of his life and recognized as one of the pinnacles of Yuri Levitansky's work.
