Edgar Allan Poe's poetry is full of hazy, mesmerizing, and dark imagery. Complex, enigmatic symbolism, full of mysterious allusions. His signature "sound painting" and abrupt rhythmic shifts. Fantastical depictions of mystical landscapes. And, of course, an obsession with the themes of doomed love and death.

He is often considered a visionary, but this isn't entirely true. In fact, he never hid the fact that the legendary "The Raven" was written with almost mathematical precision, not only in every stanza but also in every line, and that the almost equally celebrated "The Bells" attempts to convey in words the sounds of bells. However, the genius of Poe's poetry is in no way diminished by the fact that it was crafted not only by the inspiration of genius but also by backbreaking labor.
