Every person makes a contribution to the history of their country. But some individuals stand apart in the national gallery of heroes. It is to these outstanding figures—Russian pioneers, navigators, military leaders, and explorers—that the "Historical Comics" series is dedicated. The first book in the series, about Vitus Bering, a Russian naval officer and navigator, was conceived, written, and drawn by Vladislav Serov, an artist and sculptor from St. Petersburg.

Having studied a vast amount of historical material, he created a realistic, captivating graphic novel in which both the content and the illustrations are equally powerful and complement each other. The result is a beautifully drawn, multi-layered narrative about vibrant heroes and ordinary people, poignant solitude, and the joy of discovery. This is not just a clear, colorful account of a great event, but a comprehensive study and a useful supplement to school history and geography textbooks.

What is the book about? Vitus Bering led the Great Northern Expedition, which resulted in the compilation of navigational charts of Russia's northern and eastern coasts, exploration of routes to America and Japan, the discovery of numerous islands, and the description of the natural environment and life of the local population.

Bering himself reached the shores of America on the packet boat "Saint Peter." This voyage was a true feat of Russian navigators. The stated goals were achieved, but the price for these discoveries was high—in human lives, including that of Captain-Commander Vitus Bering himself.

Thanks to Russian navigators, modern Russia has become a great power. And the colossal legacy of the Great Northern Expedition is still in demand today.

At the end of the book, the reader will find a captivating afterword by writer Oleg Bundur. It will help them gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the era and the heroes' heroism. The endpapers feature expressive maps. The endpaper traces the routes of each expedition detachment, and the backsheet shows the geographical locations where the heroes' names are immortalized.

The book is recommended for children of primary and secondary school age, as well as for all fans of comics, heroic biographies, travel, and adventure.
