The name "bestiary" refers primarily to a unique collection of fictional accounts of strange, mythical animals. "The Hungarian Bestiary" is incomparably more – it is a story about the culture, history, and traditions of the Hungarian people, their heroes, legends, and myths. The book's author, Zoltán Magyar, is a specialist in Finno-Ugric folklore and a PhD candidate at the Institute of Ethnography. István Szathmáry, a contemporary Hungarian artist, created the linocuts for this book based on the sketches of the first Hungarian ethnographer, Gyula Németh.
"The Hungarian Bestiary" is a guide to Hungarian and European culture.
