Arseny Tarkovsky, the greatest poet of the twentieth century, for many years was known to his contemporaries primarily as a brilliant translator, and few people knew that he wrote poetry. Tarkovsky's first poetry collection was published only in 1962, when the author turned 55. His late debut took place almost simultaneously with the directorial debut of his son Andrei Tarkovsky, who released the movie Ivanovo Childhood the same year. Anna Akhmatova called Arseny Tarkovsky's book "a precious gift to the modern reader": "These poems, long awaited for their appearance, strike with a number of rare qualities. The most striking of them is that the words that we seem to utter every minute become unrecognizable, clothed in mystery and give birth to an unexpected echo in the heart... This new voice in Russian poetry will resound for a long time".
