Fate brought them together by chance. 84-year-old Solomon Rubinstein, the former "trouser king" and now a philanthropist supporting those suffering from poverty and loneliness, and a young Parisian taxi driver, Jean, who proudly calls himself "autodidact" and loves reading more than anything, especially thick dictionaries, because they "explain everything." Solomon invites Jean to work for his charitable association, "SOS Altruists-Amateurs," and one day the young man goes on an errand to visit 65-year-old Cora Lamenaire, a former cabaret singer whose illustrious career faded after World War II. She lives in a decent apartment and clearly suffers from no financial need, but accustomed to applause and adoration, she finds it difficult to accept the fact that she is forgotten.

Only after a hodgepodge of numerous events, sad, absurd and touching, does Jean guess what exactly once connected Cora and Solomon.
