Joseph Brodsky is one of the greatest Russian poets of the twentieth century. True to the traditions of the Russian classics - Pushkin, Baratynsky, Mandelstam - Brodsky rapidly expanded the field of his poetic work to include motifs from Latin authors: Horace, Propertius, and Ovid. He wrote prose in English, lived in the United States, and traveled frequently to Italy. In 1987 Brodsky was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for his multifaceted work, marked by the sharpness of thought and deep poeticism". This volume of selected works includes the poetry collections Stop in the Desert, The End of a Beautiful Age, Part of a Speech, New Stanzas to Augusta, Urania, and Landscape with Flood, published by the American publisher Ardis from 1970 to 1996, as well as the play Marble and an essay on Venice, Quay of the Unhealed.
