This edition reproduces the final collection of Russian poems by Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977), written between 1917 and 1974. A preliminary selection of works was made by the writer himself in the final years of his life. After his death, his wife Vera continued work on the collection, writing a preface in which she outlined "Nabokov's main theme." "Poems" introduces the reader to the most controversial and dramatic section of Nabokov's multifaceted work and includes a number of works published for the first time, as well as Nabokov's late annotations. "It is not methods or schools that animate poetry," observed the leading émigré critic G. Adamovich, who called Nabokov "a born poet," "but an inner energy seeking an outlet: only the deaf would fail to hear it in Nabokov."
The edition includes the editor's commentary and an appendix, which for the first time publishes in Russian translation Nabokov's preface to his last poetry collection published during his lifetime, Poems and Tasks (1970).
