Lev Vladimirovich Losev (1937-2009) was born in Leningrad, graduated from Leningrad University, and worked as an editor at Koster magazine (1962-1975). In 1976 he emigrated to the USA, graduated from graduate school at the University of Michigan, and taught Russian literature at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. He began publishing poems in 1979, first in émigré publications, and since 1988 in Russia.
In his work Losev is inclined to intellectual play, his poems are full of allusions from Russian literature of all centuries. In the words of Sergei Gandlevsky, they contain "the outlandish dialect of Soviet social detachment," metaphysical reflections coexist with the anger of the day, and world sorrow is juxtaposed with puns. The edition is the most complete collection of the poet's poems to date.
