Each of us knows the song "My Bells" from childhood, and everyone can sing at least the first verse of the romance "Amid the Noisy Ball." But if you ask about the author of the lyrics to these songs, almost everyone will attribute "My Bells" to Tyutchev, and "Amid the Noisy Ball" to Pushkin, although their author is Alexei Konstantinovich Tolstoy. A talented poet, more than 80 of whose works were set to music by Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and other great Russian composers, have become part of Russian culture, literally on a subconscious level.

It is A.K. Tolstoy's lyric poems that comprise the first part of this collection. The second includes ballads, parables, and stylized versions of bylinas, written on historical, mystical, fairy-tale, and fantastical themes.
