We offer to the reader the first collection of fairy tales in the history of European literature - a book by the Neapolitan writer Giambattista Basile (1566-1632), titled "A Tale of Fairy Tales". The tale of a young princess who left the palace in search of her foretold fiancé is framed by fifty other stories, divided into five days (hence the second name under which the book is known - "Pentameron"). Basile's plots and motifs influenced many storytellers of the following centuries, both directly (on Charles Perrault, Carlo Gozzi and the Grimm brothers) and indirectly (up to Alexander Pushkin, P. P. Ershov and P. P. Bazhov). However, a unique work of baroque prose make Basile's book not so much the plots as the author's vivid style - saturation of the narrative with everyday realities of Italy in the XVII century, proverbs and sayings, quotations from Latin and Italian authors, children's folklore, samples of jargon of students, soldiers and card cheats ...
