Drawing on renowned sources of Norse epic poetry—the Elder Edda, the Younger Edda, the Volsunga Saga, skald songs, and other literary sources—Yuri Svetlanov has retold the most powerful tales of gods and heroes. His retelling is very faithful to the original, but in some cases, he has delicately softened episodes of the barbaric ferocity inherent in the Norse sagas. From a wide range of literary versions, he has selected the most poetic and socially significant ones. Despite the abundance of difficult-to-pronounce names, the text is understandable and captivating from the very first lines.
The book is also interesting because it allows us to trace how Norse mythology has directly penetrated modern culture today, preserving its names and titles, and even giving rise to pantheons of gods and universes in cinema, anime, manga, fantasy, and computer games.
The ease of presentation, the poetic quality of many episodes, and the amazing charm of the mighty heroes—Odin, the father of the gods, the red-bearded hero Thor, the cunning Loki, and other vibrant characters—will attract teenagers aged 10-14 to the book, as well as anyone seriously interested in the mythology of the Scandinavian peoples.
