Captivity during wartime places a soldier in a difficult situation, often involving a threat not only from the enemy but also from his own country, and at the same time gives him a unique perspective. The memoirs of Georgy Nikolaevich Satirov (1904–1981), who fought in the people's militia in Crimea and was captured by the Germans at the very beginning of the Nazi offensive, contain his recollections of his time in prisoner-of-war labor camps in Germany from 1942 to 1945. The author describes in detail the camps' daily life, the prisoners' attitudes toward their work, toward camp staff and the local population, relationships among prisoners, ethnic conflicts, and the willingness of some to collaborate with the Nazis. He vividly portrays the prisoners, Nazi guards, and camp administration officials, and his erudition, observational skills, and storytelling talent make these memoirs not only valuable testimony but also extremely engaging reading.
