"The Work of Grief" is a book that has been collected, accumulated, built up over seven consecutive years: hard years, beautiful years, during which my three children were born, my marriage was made and broken, the world's familiar picture of me rattled and burst at the seams, wars broke out between my dearest countries, my friends passed away, people around me showed miracles of generosity or chose to betray everything they proclaimed and loved; when everything I knew about myself, everything I saw my future to be, was overturned and turned inside out by time several times over. This is a book about how tightly woven within us are all these states: powerlessness, bitterness, love, rage, humility, despair, reveling in the present, about how growing up is exactly how we try to echo that we are no longer omnipotent, the way we face our shadows, our weakness, the way we accept our own imperfection, the inequality of our expectations. It's a book about craft being salvation, about my soul finding its home, and it's a room with a veranda overlooking the ocean. It's a book about how balance, knowledge, and the ability to rely only on ourselves are worth far more than we thought in our youth, but no matter how much we give up for them, they are our most important possessions."
