The novel of the famous Russian writer-emigrant I.S. Shmelev "Paths of Heaven" is, in the author's own words, "an experience of a spiritual novel", on which he worked for more than 15 years. Unfortunately, the novel remained unfinished by the author. The first volume was written in May 1936, the second volume was created in 1944-1947. The death of the writer in 1950 prevented him from completing the last part of this trilogy. The novel is based on the true story of two people - an engineer Victor Alekseevich Weydengammer and Daria Kovaleva, who lived in the late XIX century near Optina Pustynya. Daria, a meek and deeply religious girl, spiritual daughter of the famous Optina elder Joseph, contributed to the moral rebirth of Victor Alekseevich. After her sudden death, Victor becomes a monk of Optina Pustyni. This is a novel about human feelings and moral choices, about the mysteries of the spiritual path and spiritual rebirth. Ivan Shmelev has long earned fame as a writer who in his work expresses the Orthodox view of the world. But this book is also for those who have not yet gotten used to the charm of good Russian prose.
