Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelev (1873–1950) was a Russian writer and publicist, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize. He was nicknamed the "Orthodox writer" for his numerous texts on Russian spirituality. While in exile, "not for a moment, in his spiritual turmoil, did he cease to think about Russia and be tormented by its misfortunes."

The epic "The Sun of the Dead" was the author's first significant work published in exile. It reflects the most horrific events that Ivan Shmelev was unfortunate enough to experience: the Red Terror, the famine in Crimea that began with the Bolshevik army's conquest of the territories and the introduction of the "new order" into his previously peaceful life, and, most horrifying of all, the death of his son in the dungeons of the Extraordinary Commission. This work conveys "the despair and universal anguish of the first Soviet years."

The book was translated into many languages and soon brought the author widespread fame. "Read this if you have the courage."
