This collection of works by Joseph Brodsky centers on the theme of Leningrad—the city where he was born and raised, and where he spent a significant part of his life before emigrating from the USSR. Along with such well-known poems as "From the Outskirts to the Center," "A Stop in the Desert," and "From February to April," the book also includes rarely published works such as "Stanzas to the City," "The Bay Glitters and the Wind Carries...," "The Pryazhka River Embankment," and others, as well as two essays—"A Guide to the Renamed City" and "One and a Half Rooms."

The publication includes archival photographs of Leningrad from the 1960s and 1970s. They were taken by the distinguished photographer Ilya Avraamovich Narovlyansky (1921–2000).
