Mary Stewart (1916-2014) vowed to devote her life to literature at a young age. And fortune sided with her. The first novel ("Madam, will you speak?") came to the readers' liking, and almost every new work of the English writer became a bestseller. But the real success came to her in the 1970s, when she saw the light trilogy about the wizard Merlin and King Arthur ("Crystal Grotto", "Hollow Hills", "The Last Magic"), which combined history and fiction and later grew into a pentalogy (added novels "Unkind Day" and "The Prince and the Pilgrim"). The writer herself defines her task simply:
"If the voice of legend is so persistent - if the motifs are so tenacious and revived again and again - then they contain a real grain, even in the most fantastic stories that are layered around the core of the meager facts of Arthur's existence. It is a fascinating exercise to make sense of these sometimes wild and illogical plots, to give them the character of more or less coherent and plausible accounts of human action and the world of the imagination."
