"Letters to Neighbors" is a collection of works by Mikhail Osipovich Menshikov (1859–1918), one of the key journalists and thinkers of the early 20th century, a writer and publicist, a brilliant master of words, who, without exaggeration, was read throughout Russia at the time. He published in the newspaper "Novoye Vremya," one of the most widely circulated conservative newspapers of the time. Russia's financial policy, the catastrophic alcohol consumption in the country, education in zemstvo schools and universities, the bicentennial of St. Petersburg, state insurance, charity, the Russian village, aristocracy and the people, and the Russo-Japanese War—these are the topics explored by Menshikov. He also wrote about his famous contemporaries—L.N. Tolstoy, D.I. Mendeleyev, V.V. Vereshchagin, A.P. Chekhov, and many others. The author's skillful and original voice was an indispensable compass for his readers, making their lives meaningful by answering vital questions that troubled society.
