Japanese philosopher Hiroki Azuma (b. 1971) offers a new perspective on Solzhenitsyn through a dialogue with Dostoevsky, Heidegger, and Kafka. Rather than a political biography, the focus is on an exploration of the nature of the camp experience as "undecidable." Azuma introduces the concept of probability: in the Gulag, the question "why?" loses its meaning, and fate becomes pure chance. It is from this, according to the author, that Solzhenitsyn's literature is born—from an attempt to express the unspeakable. By juxtaposing The Brothers Karamazov with Solzhenitsyn's characters, Azuma demonstrates how the boundary between politics and literature blurs, and the writer's "moralizing" proves not naive, but necessary. The book includes an essay from 1991 and an interview with the author from 2026, where his idea of "the touch of probability" is developed in the concepts of "tourist philosophy" and "misdelivery."
