This book brings together two texts by the Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset (1883–1955) devoted to understanding the role of technology throughout history: a short course of lectures, "Reflections on Technology," delivered at the opening of the Summer University of Santander in 1933, and a paper, "The Myth of Man Behind Technology" (1951), from the so-called Darmstadt Conversations. In these lectures, Ortega discusses the differences between humans and animals, discusses the stages of technology's development, and the changing role of technology over the past centuries, when the means necessary for transforming the world began to dominate its creator to such an extent that man and technology reversed places: the machine was no longer a tool for producing something new, but the worker became a technical operator, losing their humanity in this sense.
