Anthologies rarely make history, but "Dangerous Visions" is a great and remarkable exception. Back in 1967, a time of student unrest, the inglorious Vietnam War, and the psychedelic revolution, writer and editor Harlan Ellison pulled off a true cultural provocation. He asked the leading science fiction writers of his time to contribute a story for the collection he was compiling that would express a true, "dangerous" vision of the future and therefore, at the time, be unpublishable. The list of authors was truly impressive: Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, Roger Zelazny, Poul Anderson, Robert Silverberg, Philip José Farmer, and others.

For each story, Harlan Ellison wrote an original introduction to the author. The writers themselves contributed afterwords, revealing the nuances of their creative explorations. For the anthology as a whole, forewords were written by the grandmaster of the "golden age" of science fiction, Isaac Asimov, the father of the "new wave," Michael Moorcock, and Ellison's successor, Michael Straczynski.
