Julia Mannherz's book is dedicated to the history of occult ideas and practices in Russia. The author examines how occult views, which originated in closed salons, penetrated popular culture at the turn of the century. In her research, Mannherz examines the debates of the 1870s about spiritualistic séances, analyzes the world of popular occult magazines, and touches on the topic of haunted houses, the narratives of which were widespread in both cities and rural areas. In addition, the author examines the reaction of Russian Orthodox theologians to occultism. Julia Mannherz is Associate Professor of Modern History at Oriel College, University of Oxford. Her research focuses on the social and cultural history of Russia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. She is currently working on a project on amateur music culture in Russia.
