Christianity is often perceived as a socially conservative, pro-capitalist religion that skews towards the political right. But how valid is this interpretation when we remember that Christianity’s earliest followers were oppressed? In The Christian Left, Anthony Williams challenges the perception of Christianity as a religion of inequality by providing an introductory overview of socialist and radical Christian movements over the past 150 years.

Focusing on contemporary Christian left movements – from Christian socialism to liberation theology, from Martin Luther King’s civil rights movement to queer theology – Williams examines the main challenges facing the Christian left today, both from within Christianity itself and from the secular left. Do the Bible and Christian theology really support collectivism and universal equality? Can Christian radicalism remain viable in the age of identity politics?

Anthony A. J. Williams is a British political theorist at Manchester Metropolitan University.
