The doctrine of the soul's postmortal ordeal is contained in the Holy Tradition, which is in harmony with the Holy Scriptures, and in the works of Church writers.
Christ spoke of the Angels who would bind the sinner and take him to darkness (see Mt. 22:13), the Apostle Paul, speaking of the evil day (Eph. 6:13), had in mind the day of death and the beginning of the taxation, and according to the interpretation of Blessed Theophylact of Bulgaria, the Mother of God herself and the holy Great Martyr George the Victorious feared death and the taxation. "The doctrine of the taxation is the doctrine of the Church," writes St. Ignatius (Bryanchaninov). He also writes: "We borrow the detailed description of the taxing of the tax collectors and the order in which they follow one after another in the airy abyss from the narrative of the Venerable Theodora." God's mercy reveals through His chosen servants that which is usually hidden from our senses, but which is essential for our salvation, and in the very images that are accessible and understandable to us. Careful reading of the book will help the reader to prepare for confession and to find a penitential mood.
