In 1922–23, translations of Romain Rolland's "Colas Brugnon" and Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" were published, masterfully crafted by the young Vladimir Nabokov. The intricacy of the original texts makes these works incredibly challenging to translate, especially into Russian, according to some critics. Nabokov, who had been familiar with French and English since childhood, demonstrated not only a profound understanding of the authors' intent but also a complete mastery of his native Russian.

"Nikolka Persik" is the first translation of "Colas Brugnon" into Russian, and "Anya in Wonderland" is considered one of the best translations from the original.

Vladimir Nabokov was an eight-time Nobel Prize nominee in literature. His most popular novels, "Lolita," "Invitation to a Beheading," and "Camera Obscura," are widely known and have been adapted into films. He discovered his gift for translation as a child: at age 11, he translated Mayne Reid's "The Headless Horseman" into French in Alexandrine verse.

"Nikolka Persik" and "Anya in Wonderland" were among the first works Nabokov signed with his literary pseudonym, V. Sirin.
