The book "Invisible Warfare" first became known to Russian readers in the translation of St. Theophan the Hermit in 1885, after which it was repeatedly reprinted. It has become a classic guide to spiritual life, a textbook for those who try to fulfill the commandments of the Lord: to forgive offenses, pray for those who do harm, love even their enemies. "The Invisible Battle" reveals to the reader the path to salvation in Christ. In the words of the Monk Nicodemus Svyatogorets, "this book, every person who wants salvation, learns how to defeat invisible enemies of their own, to gain the treasures of true and divine virtues and for that to receive an imperishable crown and eternal pledge, which is unity with God and in the present age, and in the future". This battle, says the author, is immeasurably difficult because the enemy is in us, and therefore, "entering into battle with ourselves, in our own selves, we meet the antagonists," in other words, we fight with the evil that we learn to recognize in ourselves. In preparing this edition, the text has been brought closer to modern norms of orthography and punctuation, with explanations of obscure words and notes. The Appendix contains articles by Hegumen Leontius Kozlov, candidate of theology at the Moscow Theological Academy: "The Life of St. Nicodemus the Svyatogorets" and "The Origin of the Book of the Invisible Battle".
