Afanasy Afanasyevich Fet (1820–1892) was a remarkable Russian poet of the 19th century, a “singer of nature and love,” and a refined lyricist. M. Yu. Lotman noted the “impressionistic immediacy” inherent in his poems and even saw in them a closeness “to the poetics of cinema and figurative montage.” There is no period of formation in Fet’s work: his lyrical “I” appeared to the world already whole and complete. According to the poet’s close friend, Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, his poems are written simultaneously “firmly and easily,” and some are written in such a way that “not a word can be added, subtracted, or changed.” Fet’s conversation about the eternal—about love, the fullness of life, closeness to nature, about beauty and the difficulty of expressing it—continues two centuries later, carrying the idea of harmony between soul and world, acceptance of existence as it is, with all its variability and finiteness.
