From Wagner's operas to Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, our entire culture is imbued with motifs from the tales of the European North. From the songs of the Edda and the Kalevala, from the Scandinavian legends of the Nibelungs, threads stretch to chivalric novels and the cycle about King Arthur. And folk tales about elves, dwarves and trolls gave rise to the genre of fairy tale fiction - from "The Chronicles of Narnia" to "Harry Potter", "Game of Thrones" and "The Witcher". With legends from the world of Thor and Odin, dragons and Valkyries Russian readers were introduced in the middle of the XIX century historian, literary critic and translator Peter Polevoy. His collection of myths and legends of Scandinavia became for Russian schoolchildren the same discovery as Kuhn's "Legends and Myths of Ancient Greece". A century and a half later, this book returns to us with magical illustrations by Joseph Alanen, Robert Wilhelm Eckmann, Ferdinand Leke and other famous artists.
