How did the world come into being? It was created by God's word. It was born from a silver egg laid by the goddess Night. It was formed from the body of a giant who had given up the ghost. It was crafted by a god-smith or potter. And sometimes, for the sake of the world's creation, the immortal gods themselves die—sacrifice themselves...
Human imagination has concocted thousands of stories about how this world came to be—and why it is as it is. However, these are more than mere fictions. Cosmogonic myths also raise many profound, tormenting questions: why is the world so complex and contradictory? Is time finite? And, most importantly, what "went wrong" at the beginning of time, that makes man mortal—like all living things?
Vladimir Petrukhin's new book is a stunning excursion into the cosmogonies of dozens of cultures, both ancient and modern: from Sumer and Babylon to India and Scandinavia, from the Bible to northern shamans. You'll discover many unexpected details about familiar myths, discover new ones you might not have heard of, and see amazing intersections between disparate mythologies.
