Yokai are characters in Japanese folklore, legends, and horror stories. Why are some frightening, others bring good luck, and still others simply mischievous? Professor Michael Foster began searching for answers to these and other questions while looking at a kappa figurine on his refrigerator. He became so fascinated that he dedicated 25 years of research to yokai. Now he's ready to take you into this mysterious world.
Today, people continue to reimagine yokai. These creatures live on in urban legends, memes, manga, anime, Hayao Miyazaki cartoons, and video games, changing but remaining an integral part of Japanese culture.
"Myths of the Yokai" is the first comprehensive study of yokai in Russian. You'll learn why tanuki pride themselves on their impressive anatomy, how amabie became a symbol of hope during the pandemic, and how the ancient ubume evolved into the terrifying Momo, which frightened children around the world.
The book is illustrated with original monochrome works by artist and yokai researcher Shinonome Kijin, as well as photographs by the author and historical images.
